For Portrait Photographers and Fashion Photographers alike:

To Make DISTINCTIVE and EYE-CATCHING photographs, You just need to do ONE thing…

How to actually improve as a portrait photographer

If you’re reading this, you’ve probably seen my YouTube channel “The Genius of Joe” and watched a few videos on how to not only improve as a portrait photographer, but to actually make work that stands out and make it DISTINCTIVE.

It’s not just about knowing how to compose an image and that you can get things in focus and sharp with your “creamy bokeh”. What if I told you there is MUCH MORE to that?

Here are some mistakes portrait photographers make (and that YOU may be making) that stop them from making DISTINCTIVE work and improving;

  • Only focusing on YOUR geAR AND chasing the most expensive equipment

  • NOT PUTTING ALL THE aspects OF YOUR PHOTOGRAPHy into consideration when taking portraits

  • NOT KNOWING HOW TO TELL A STORY IN YOUR PHOTOS

My YouTube channel covers ALL of these issues for FREE. But you’ve come to the right place if you seek more personal advice about YOUR own work.

Who is this for?

Portrait Photographers who are either new to the game or looking to improve and to start making work that actually stands out to the rest of the competition and not make work that fits in with the crowd.

📸

You’re tired of taking portraits with no personality nor have specific style.

📸

You want to make progress NOW rather than waiting years for your portfolio to grow at a snail’s pace.

📸

You don’t have a mentor who can give you frequent advice about your photography.

No, it’s not because of your gear or because your lens isn’t f/1.2.

It’s not even down to your experience per say. It’s because you don’t think about EVERYTHING in your photo and you’re too fixated to your side of the photos.

“I need a 50mp camera for sharp images”

“I need this 85mm f/1.2 to get that creamy bokeh”

Think of any big fashion/portrait photographer. Now look at there work. “Why is it so good”? you may ask. Yes, obviously they have the best gear, biggest crew and best models, but one other thing that they have in common and that you can use to improve YOUR work is…

The hyper focus on what is in front of the frame. Not just the lighting, but the poses, costume design, the make up, the location, etc.

“How is costume design anything to do with photography” - well, it’s obviously to do with photography because it’s IN YOUR PHOTO.

Stop being close minded and only thinking about your side of the shoot!

All these factors will play a role in reinforcing the story you are trying to tell in your photos!

You notice, once you start thinking beyond your gear and start thinking about these external factors, your photos INSTANTLY improve.

“Why are my photos shit”?/The Secret

“I don’t have the right gear”

What if I told you you DON’T need the best gear to take AMAZING photos and you can produce EYE POPPING results with the camera and lens you have right now?

I would lying if I said it doesn’t matter at all but what I am telling you is that you don’t need the top of the line kit to get the best results. I’ve produced GREAT results with cheaper and not so ideal equipment. It’s about your raw skill as a photography to know how to tell a story or to navigate with the equipment you own right now.

Before we even think about gear, we need to think about what is in front of you - THE MODEL.

This is how you make distinctive work that is unique to you!

Photography is all about story telling. What is the story you want to tell in your photos? Don’t just do a random shoot with a model and start taking photos.

Where’s your preparation? A mood board? What’s the story?

First and simple step is to have a story you want to tell in mind. Get that story and apply it all the aspects of your photo that can reinforce said story.

What will the model wear?

What location are you shooting in?

What lens are you going to use?

What lighting will be best for this story?

ALL these aspects need to be tailored to the theme/story you want to tell

“I don’t want to tell a story In my photos”

This is nonsense. Without a story, there is no good photo with depth.

When I refer to a “story”, it doesn’t have to specifically be a literal story like a narrative. I’m referring to a theme, a personality, a culture, an emotion.

Just something that adds depth to your photos.

You notice, once you start taking photos with intention, they will INSTANTLY IMPROVE.

The advantages of being a unique portrait photographer

  • Get more clients

  • Charge more to said clients

  • Make work that is fulfilling and enjoyable

  • Photography is actually fun

  • Stop ai from taking your job

Why am I the person to teach you?

Why listen to me?

Well, I was once in your position… ONLY A YEAR AGO. I know what it’s like to take boring portraits and not knowing to find your style.

In just one year I was able to go from creating bland work that may be technically good, but was not eye popping in the slightest, getting basically no clients.

To now being able get frequent work from brands and models making unique and striking imagery.

It could me a year of trial and error and education but through this coaching program, I aim to speed up your photography progress and start creating work you want to create in half that time (only if you listen to me lol).

All of the photos you see on my portfolio are from THIS YEAR (2024), so not years of progress and work, but in only the space of less than a year.

My photos are only getting better and I’m learning so much a long the way.

Let me take you on that journey into becoming the best photographers we can be!
